SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION

The first place that most new businesses think of to get the site traffic is the Search Engines. It’s a logical thought process because it’s the place we all go when we want to find something on the Net. Whether it’s Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Ask.com, it’s the place we go to find things, so it’s logical that, if people want to be found, they should get listed in the search engines.
But here’s the problem – to get to the very top of the search engine listings, you have to pay. Sometimes a great deal of money. To get in the first 50 generic (unpaid) listings for your particular niche, you need to optimize every page of your web site so that it’s recognized by the search engines.
Why 50? - Because that’s about as far as most people look when they do an online search. How often have you searched for something and got past the 50th listing? Not often, eh?
If you are in a big, global market you might as well be realistic and accept that you are never going to get those top 50 generic positions in a month of Sundays. On the other hand, there are ways that you can get search engine traffic, and we’ll be looking at them in this chapter.
First of all though, why are the search engines so important? Simple; it’s because, for most businesses, between 30% and 80% of all site visitors will eventually find your web site via the search engines. If you ignore them, you’ll be ignoring a huge and potentially profitable market. While we are NOT suggesting that you elevate search engine optimization to Holy Grail status, we are certainly suggesting that it’s not something you should easily forget.
So here’s secret #1 about search engines...
There are, in fact, just TEN major search engines that hold the massive databases that determine position. If you can get a good ranking in just one of the ten major engines, you will automatically rank well in over 200 others.
The criteria used by search engines to rank a site well or otherwise are secrets that are closely guarded by the search-engine owners. Some people claim to have cracked the secret of the algorithms used by the search engines (so they can sell you the information at hugely inflated prices!), but it is generally accepted that each engine uses its own logic.
The only way you’re going to do well in all of them is to create pages that are optimized for one particular engine, and we’ll be taking that idea a little further in a moment. Meanwhile, more than 180 million people a day launch their surfing from a search engine.
That’s a LOT of people.
Now you understand why, if you have a top ten ranking, the traffic is simply going to flood into your site.
Unfortunately, getting a top ten ranking is like winning Olympic Gold... unless, of course, you own a site that specializes in some obscure topic - in which case it shouldn’t be too difficult to get to the top of the rankings.
For most of us, it’s a logistical nightmare. That’s why you need an experienced search marketing professional who keeps two fingers on the pulse of the major search engines. If Google hiccups, we know about it. If Yahoo! gets stubborn, we’ll coax those rankings back to the first page.
